HOW TO PREPARE GAO - HERBAL POULTICE / PASTE

METHODS OF PREPARING   SAN  -  GAO
HERBAL POULTICE - PADDING - PASTE - COMPRESS

Method of Preparation #1 Green Tea or Water

  • Pour Powdered Herbs in to a small bowl
  • Make a Cup of Green Tea. Allow to Cool to Room Temperature (or Below by adding 1 Ice Cube to Tea as it Cools)
  • Slowly add small amounts of Cooled Tea to Powdered Herbs
  • Mix Herbs Until well blended with the consistency of Thick Mud
  • Follow Instructions for Application on Container
  • As another option the Green Tea can be poured over herbs while still hot, then allowing all ingredients to cool before application.
    • NOTES: This method  is particularly use full when preparing Cooling or Neutral Remedies as Green Tea is known to have Natural Cooling Anti-Inflammatory effect on injuries.  Additionally Small amounts of Cooling Liniment may be added to green tea. The only disadvantage is that the Powdered Herbs Need to be remoistened with more tea or water every few hours to stay Active.

    Method of Preparation #2 Alcohol & Warm Water / Tea
  • Pour Powdered Herbs in to a small bowl
  • Make a Cup of Green Tea or Simply use Hot Water
  • Slowly add small amounts of  ½ Hot Tea / Water  &  ½  Alcohol to Powdered Herbs
  • While Hot Mix Herbs Until well blended with the consistency of Thick Mud
  • Allow to Cool to a Reasonable temperature, taking care not to use while hot enough to burn the skin, but use while still warm
  • Follow Instructions for Application on Container
    • NOTES:  Works well for Neutral &Warming Remedies. Alcohol adds an additional Warming Property and Warms Tissue, Increases local circulation, moves Qi and Blood through Blood Vessels and Meridians. It also Helps to activate the Herbs properties.  There is no set amount of alcohol to be used.  The prolonged contact to the Skin can have a Drying effect. While Pure alcohol can be used, we believe that  ½ alcohol - ½ hot water will work  just as well. Regardless of how much alcohol is used, When re-wetting the Herbs it is only necessary to use Water(warm or room temperature). Several Alcohols can be used the best being Bai Jiu(White Liquor), Vodka(Suggested), or Rum. What type is only 60 - 80 proof is necessary

    Method of Preparation #3 Oil & Beeswax - Paste - Balm
  • Heat 2 Cups Oil (Safflower, Olive or Sesame ) & 1 Cup Granulated Beeswax over low - med/low heat until wax is completely melted, Stirring Often
  • While continually stirring, slowly add 4 ounces of powdered herbs
  • Continue to Heat and Stir for 10 - 15 minutes so that the Oils from the Herbs completely blend with the Oil & Wax
  • Remove from heat
  • It is Important in making a Quality Balm to stir Cooling Ingredients Continuously, Until the Balm has Cooled. Which may take several hours depending on amount made. As the Ingredients are trying to separate until the Balm is solidified.
    • NOTES: This is the most complicated manner of Preparation, Requiring the most experience as well as time to prepare. It is important to never boil. When preparing a Paste / Balm it is Better to prepare enough so that you will have it for Some time to come, as it is tedious  and time consuming it is not something you will want to do when you have an injury to the Ankle or Wrist, the place these Poultices are most often used. Please note that preparation in this way is Traditionally done, with Experience, By Eye. The Measurements given above are approximate, used to prepare a 4 ounce(¼ pound) Herb Kit,  Reduced from the larger formula we follow.  Measurements given are for Granulated Bee's Wax (available on our Website).  Typically the Oils used are Safflower (Recommended) Sesame or Olive oil.


    ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT NOTES: If your Herb Kit comes with separately packaged herbs as is the case with Shaolin Hong Yuan San / Gao (Bing Pian) these are added last. If using preparation method #1 or #2 a Small Pinch or Two is added to each poultice made. If using Method of Preparation #3 the Entire package is added to Mixture when it is removed from Heat.
