METHODS OF PREPARING HERBAL SOAKS
Herbal Soaks / Immersions or JinPao are a Great Treatment Method to Dispel Cold, Break Stagnation, Stasis, Increase Circulation, Kill Pain, Relieve Spasm, Heat Tendons, Remove Residual Swelling and a host of other Benefiets. They are also Fairly Inexpensive, As well as easy to Prepare and Use. On This Page we will Explain a few different methods of preparation as well as a few Different uses of these Formulas As JinPao (Immersions / Soak) or As Gao (Compress / Fomentation)

But First A Few Quick Notes, While these Formulas are Safe, They are Not Used for Every Injury, If used incorrectly They can do more Harm than Good

Method of Preparation #1 (JinPao - Herbal Soak / Immersion)

  • Place Herbs, Either Loose or Contained in a Flow through Bag in Large Earthen Ware or Stainless Steel Pot
  • Cover Herbs with 2 - 3 Gallons of Fresh Water
  • Cover Pot, Bring Herbs & Water to a Rapid Boil
  • Once Boiling Reduce Heat to a Simmer
  • Continue Cooking for 25 - 35 Minutes with Cover On
  • Remove From Heat and Uncover, and Let Liquid Begin to Cool as it is Far to Hot to Be Used as a Soak
  • As Soak Cools to a Reasonable Temperature for Immersion, Injury Can Be Fumigated With the Steam, Rotating the Wrist or Ankle etc. Above the Cooling Pot
  • Once the Liquid has Cooled to A Reasonable Temperature (Very Warm - But Not Hot Enough to Scold the Skin) Slowly Immerse Injured Area in Pot
  • Do this Very Gradually to Insure the Liquid has Cooled Sufficiently
  • If At any Point you feel liquid is to Hot, Do not hesitate to Remove Your Ankle or Wrist Etc. wait a Moment and try reinserting.
  • It may be necessary to Repeatedly Immerse and Remove area Until the Heat Becomes Tolerable
  • Soak Injured Area 15 - 25 Minutes
  • Cover Remaining Soak and Save For up to 10 Days
  • Reheat Before re-using, It is not Necessary to Boil again, Simply heat to a suitable temperature
  • Soak Injury 1 - 2 Times Per Day for 1 - 10 Days in a Row, Adding More water to Soak if Necessary

JinPao as Gao
Herbal Soaks (JinPao) are used as Gao (Poultices or Compress / Fomentations) When the Area Being treated can not be Immersed in a Pot. Such as a Knee or the Back. This method is often used pre & post massage as well. Towels are Soaked in the Hot Liquid, Squeezed, Strained or Wrung out before being used as a Compress. It Should Be Drained enough So it is still Wet but Does not Drip. Careful attention must be paid not to burn your hands During this, As the Liquid should Be Close to Hot enough to Do this.

Methods of Towel Preparation

  • Towels can be Soaked in Pot, Removed with Tongs or large wooden Spoon, and Allowed to Drain, Before being Used as Compress
We Find that the Following Method is the Easiest, Fastest & Most Effective. After Towel is Removed from Pot it Cools Very Quickly. Ideally the Towel is Applied as fast as Possible. You will want to Spend as little time as possible draining the Towel before it is Applied
  • Towel is Folded in Half, Gripped at opposing Corners and Twisted until Semi Tight
  • Holding the Very edges, the Twisted Towel is Dipped in the Liquid for a moment
  • Pulled out and Further Tightened by slowly Pulling Taut to Wring Out Before Being Applied, Usually Folded in Half for a double Layering
  • Towels Cool Very Quickly, So you will want to have several ready for use.
  • If applying to yourself Be Careful and apply Slowly, In a "Tapping" Motion at First to Ensure the Towel is not to Hot
  • If Applying to Others a Good Channel of Communication should be open so that Burns do not occur
  • Never Place a the Full Weight of a Soaked Towel on another Person with out testing it on yourself First. Simply Drag the Towel across your arm on the way to there Injury.
  • We find it Useful to Quickly drag Warm Compress across the persons Back and asking if it is to hot Before Committing to Laying the Pressure of the Towel on them
  • If Towels are To Hot for Application, Still holding the Outside edges, the Towels can be unfolded and Shake for a Second or Two, They will be Steaming profusely and will Cool very Quickly this way. Only one or two shakes is usually necessary

  • Method of Preparation #2 (Gao - Herbal Compress / Fomentation)

    • Place Herbs, Either Loose or Contained in a Flow through Bag in Large Earthen Ware or Stainless Steel Pot
    • Cover Herbs with 1 1/2 - 4 Gallons of Fresh Water (Depending on Formula and Use)
    • Cover Pot, Bring Herbs & Water to a Rapid Boil
    • Once Boiling Reduce Heat to a Simmer
    • Continue Cooking for 25 - 35 Minutes with Cover On
    • Remove From Heat and UnCover, and Let Liquid Begin to Cool.
    • When used as a Compress, It is not necessary to Allow the Liquid to Cool as Much as When used as an immersion, But it is Still Far to Hot to Be Used at this Point, You Will have to Wait at least 10 - 20 Minutes
    • Soak Towels as Described Above
    • Wrap Towels around, or Drape towels Over Injured area, Cover with another Towel (Second Towel is Dry)
    • Replace Towel with a Fresh one Every 5 Min for 15 - 25 Minutes
    • Cover Remaining Soak and Save For up to 10 Days
    • Reheat Before re-using, It is not Necessary to Boil again, Simply heat to a suitable temperature
    • Soak Injury 1 - 2 Times Per Day for 1 - 10 Days in a Row, Adding More water to Soak if Necessary

Method of Preparation #3 (Herbal Compress Ball)

    • When used as a Compress, It is not necesarry to Allow the Liquid to Cool as Much as When used as an immersion, But it is Still Far to Hot to Be Used at this Point, You Will have to Wait at least 10 - 20 Minutes
    • The Herbs are Strained Out of Liquid (This is easiest if the Herbs are Prepackaged in a Flow Through Bag)
    • Once removed they Strained and Placed in the Middle of a Small Towel (square is best)
    • Pull the Four Corners of towel together over Herbs piled in middle
    • Twist the Towel Forming a round ball with the Herbs inside
    • Continue to twist very tightly forming a handle Above Ball with Remaining material
    • Secure Handle with String or Ribbon, Wrapping From the Herbal Ball up the Handle Tightly
    • This Herbal Compress Ball can be used for Massage or as a Stay in place Compress
    • The Herbal Compress Ball can be Re-Heated by Immersing in Liquid (Ball Only) - Press Ball against side of Pan to Drain
    • Once Drained it Can be reapplied carefully, making sure it is Not Hot Enough to Cause Burn
    • Alternatively the Compress Ballcan be Re-Heated using the Steam that rises from the Pot of Liquid Soak
    • Herbal Compress Ball should be Re-Heated often so there is no break in the Heat being applied

ABOUT THE HERBS USED FOR HERB PACKS

THE MOST COMMON METHOD USED TO ASCERTAIN THE QUALITY OF AN HERB IS  THROUGH ITS OBSERVABLE PROPERTIES, COLOR, SMELL OR SIZE. THE HERB'S PLACE OF ORIGIN, HOWEVER IS ACTUALLY THE MOST RELIABLE METHOD. SINCE MODERN SCIENCE CANNOT IDENTIFY THE ACTIVE ELEMENTS OF THE HERBS OR EXPLAIN THERE EFFECT, IT IS ULTIMATELY THE GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN OF THE HERB THAT BEST SIGNIFIES ITS MEDICINAL PURPOSE. FOR EXAMPLE THE HERB SCHISANDRA  IS MOST POTENT WHEN GROWN IN THE NORTH, AND LEAST POTENT WHEN GROWN IN THE WEST OR SOUTH. THEREFORE THE REGION IN WHICH AN HERB IS GROWN IS AN IMPORTANT DETERMINANT AND SIGNIFIER OF THE HERB'S QUALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS. AT THE SCAR FAMILY WE USE ONLY HERBS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY AND HAILING FROM THE BEST REGIONS OF THE WORLD.

THESE ARE THE SAME REGION SPECIFIC HERBS THAT WERE USED FOR CENTURIES AT THE LEGENDARY SHAOLIN, WUDANG & OMEI TEMPLES. AUTHENTICALLY SOURCED FROM THE FARTHEST REACHES OF ASIA.
THESE ARE NOT HERBS GROWN IN MEXICO FOR THE CALIFORNIA NEW AGE MOVEMENT.

ALL HERBS HAVE BEEN GROWN ORGANICALLY WITH OUT CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS OR PESTICIDES AND CONTAIN NO ARTIFICIAL COLORING OR PRESERVATIVES. AND ARE DRIED NATURALLY OR ELECTRONICALLY WITH OUT SULFUR CONTAMINATION OFTEN FOUND IN CHEAPER HERBS FROM EXTENSIVE COAL DRYING.

EVERY COMPANY CLAIMS TO HAVE ONLY THE HIGHEST QUALITY HERBS ON THERE WEBSITE. WHAT MAKE US DIFFERENT? WE GO OUT OF OUR WAY TO NOT USE THE SAME HERB SUPPLIERS AS OUR COMPETITION (AT OUR EXPENSE), AND WE OFFER VERY CLEAR QUALITY PICTURES OF OUR HERBS FOR YOUR TO VIEW AND COMPARE WITH OTHERS. DOING THIS IT IS VERY EASY TO SEE THAT THE EXTRA MONEY WE SPEND TO STOCK OUR HERBS IS WELL WORTH IT FOR THE QUALITY OF HERBS WE RECEIVE, USE AND SELL.
