膏 Gao (Gou) can be Translated as Plaster, Paste, Ointment, Cream, Poultice etc. The Term also encompasses Herbal Compresses & Paddings. A very traditional method of treating traumatic injuries sustained during Martial Arts training. Along With Die Da Jiu (Dit Da Jow) Herbal Poultices and Plasters (Gao) are among the most useful and versatile injury treatment options. Gao has many of the same properties as Die Da Jiu, each having a specific purpose. The added benefit of Gao is that they have a prolonged application to the injury. While much of the liquid in a Jiu(jow) that does not soak in to the skin evaporates due to its alcohol content. Gao predominantly Infuses the herbs in oil and then binds with wax. Ensuring the Herbs Remain active and in place against the skin. Though they can be used at any time, Gao is the perfect choice for overnight use, when the injured joint can be wrapped and immobile for an extended period of time.
Though most commonly prepared with a Blend of Oil & Wax, a Gao formula can be mixed with a wide variety of mediums to meet the needs of the martial artist and the particulars of the injury.
